Collection: Top Handle Bags

Small leather bags with a handle on top, mostly cowhide: Boston, bowling, satchel and box shapes. Most come with a detachable strap, so the same bag goes from hand-carried to crossbody.

Why a top handle

A top handle gives a bag a more finished, upright look and makes it easy to set down and pick up. The trade-off is that a hand-carried bag ties up a hand, which is why almost every bag here also has a long strap that clips on or adjusts.

The shapes

Boston and bowling bags are rounded with a zip across the top and plenty of depth for their size. Satchels are flatter with a flap or clasp. Box bags are rigid and small, built for an evening rather than a full day. Product pages give the width, height and depth in inches so you can compare shapes directly.

Structure

Because a top-handle bag is carried by its frame, it needs leather that holds a shape. Most bags here are top-grain cowhide with a structured base; softer pebbled versions keep their outline but give a little more in the hand.

Questions

What is a top handle bag?

A bag with a short handle on top, meant to be carried in the hand or on the forearm. Most here also have a detachable shoulder or crossbody strap.

What is a Boston bag?

A rounded bag with a zip running across the top and two short handles, based on a classic travel shape scaled down to handbag size. It has more depth than most bags of the same width.

Can a top handle bag be worn crossbody?

Yes, if it comes with a long strap. The product page says whether the strap is included, whether it detaches and how long it is.
