Collection: Clutch Bags

Flat cowhide clutches in envelope, pleated and flap shapes. Every one has a chain strap, so it works in the hand at dinner and on the shoulder the rest of the day.

A clutch with a strap

A classic clutch has no strap at all, which is elegant for an hour and awkward for an evening. Each clutch here comes with a chain you can clip on: some hang from the shoulder, a couple sit long enough to wear crossbody. Take the chain off and it is a clutch again.

Envelope, pleated or flap

Envelope clutches have a pointed or tucked flap and the cleanest outline. The pleated clutch gathers soft leather into folds and closes with a clasp. Flap styles close with a magnet. All are cowhide, roughly 10 to 11.5 inches wide and only 1.5 to 2 inches deep.

What fits

Because a clutch is wide and shallow, it takes flat things well: a large phone lying flat, cards, keys, a lipstick and folded notes. Most have an inside zip pocket or card slots so small things stay put. Bulky items such as a sunglasses case usually do not fit — check the depth on the product page.

Questions

What is a clutch bag?

A flat, strapless or short-strapped bag designed to be held in the hand or tucked under the arm. The ones here add a removable chain so you are not limited to carrying it.

Can a clutch be worn as a shoulder bag?

Yes, with the chain clipped on. The product page says whether the chain is shoulder length or long enough for crossbody.

Is a clutch big enough for a phone?

A large phone fits lying flat in all of these; they are around 10 to 11.5 inches wide. Depth is the limit, so leave out anything thick.

Are leather clutches only for evening?

No. In smooth or pebbled cowhide with the chain on, a clutch works as a slim day bag for when you carry very little.
