Crossbody vs Shoulder Bag: Which One Do You Actually Want?

Crossbody and shoulder bags are often listed side by side as if the only difference were strap length. In use they behave very differently, and the right choice depends less on the bag than on what you are doing while wearing it.

Crossbody: worn across, weight distributed

A crossbody strap runs from one shoulder to the opposite hip. The weight is spread across your back rather than resting on one shoulder, which is why a crossbody is the bag you can wear for six hours without noticing it.

It is also the bag that does not fall off. If you are on public transport, carrying a coffee, or holding a child's hand, that matters more than any other feature.

The trade: it sits across the front of your body, which some people dislike over a coat, and getting into it means reaching down rather than across.

Shoulder bag: worn under the arm, faster to reach

A shoulder bag hangs from one shoulder and sits at or above the hip, often tucked under the arm. It is quicker to open — the opening is right there — and it reads more deliberate. Baguette, crescent and half-moon shapes are all shoulder bags, and the silhouette does more work than the capacity number.

The trade: the weight is on one shoulder, and it will slide off when you lean. For a light bag over a day of errands that is fine. For a heavy bag on a long day it is not.

Strap drop is the number that decides it

Strap drop is the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag, and it is not the same as the strap's total length. A short drop sits at the waist; a longer one at the hip. A bag sold as "convertible" is usually just a bag with an adjustable strap long enough to do both.

To find your number, measure from the top of your shoulder to where you want the bag to sit, and compare it to the drop listed on the product page. More on this in our size guide.

Which to buy first

If you are buying one bag, buy the crossbody. It covers more situations and it is the one you will wear on the days you are not thinking about what you are wearing. Add the shoulder bag second, for the days you are.
